New Year’s Resolution: Prioritizing One-to-One Tutoring

When it comes to our children, most parents are dedicated to honing their interests to the best of their abilities. Whether the children are interested in art, music, sports, or other extracurricular activities, many parents spend multiple hours and potentially dollars to help them thrive in their areas of interest. These activities are exceptional confidence builders, often coming with performances, opportunities to shine, and applause. Therefore, they are essential to children’s growth processes and to establishing hobbies, interests, positive mindsets, and an ability to thrive outside of the classroom.

However, when it comes to investing in extra academic help, parents and children can be more hesitant. Academic support, in the form of one-to-one tutoring, is a quieter method of building confidence. Tutoring promotes internal growth.

While extracurricular activities nurture creativity, teamwork and confidence, academic support is foundational – it helps children believe that they can overcome obstacles and achieve success in topics that seemed of no interest to them or too challenging for them. When a child struggles academically, the effects can ripple outward. Frustration can turn into avoidance, disengagement, or anxiety. When a child avoids homework, saying “I’m just bad at chemistry,” it’s not simply an academic problem. It’s a sign of confidence slipping away. Moreover, since most academic concepts build on each other, if a child doesn’t develop a strong academic foundation, new information becomes overwelcoming. Without targeted support, children start to feel like failures.

Over the past decade, studies indicate that one-to-one tutoring keeps children on track and provides a powerful solution by addressing learning challenges. Educational research consistently supports the impact of personalized instruction. Studies from organizations such as the National Bureau of Economic Research and the U.S. Department of Education demonstrate that high-dosage tutoring, consistent, individualized instruction multiple times per week, can accelerate learning by several months within a single academic year, particularly in math and literacy. These findings reinforce what we see every day at GAMECHANGER Tutoring Connection: when students receive the right support, at the right level, with the right educator, their trajectory changes.

Children spend close to 2000 hours in classrooms. In these classroom environments, teachers must balance the needs of many students simultaneously. Alternatively, one-to-one tutoring is a deeply personal experience. One-to-one tutoring targets the needs of the individual child. It’s relationship based and creates a trust and a willingness by the child to take risks. As such, there’s no grading or formal evaluation that can make children hyper-concerned about their performance within this dynamic.

A skilled tutor, like those on the GAMECHANGER Tutoring Connection team, can identify precisely where a concept breaks down, clarify misunderstandings, and rebuild confidence step by step. This personalized approach allows children to ask questions freely, take intellectual risks without fear of embarrassment, and develop a deeper, more lasting understanding of material.

One-to-one tutoring helps children learn essential life skills as well – from time management to organizational skills. Children learn to organize their workload, break complex tasks into manageable steps, and advocate for themselves when they need help. They develop perseverance, accountability, and goal-setting habits that serve them throughout their educational journey and into adulthood. Perhaps most importantly, one-to-one tutoring creates a “can do” mindset, nurturing resilience and intellectual curiosity.

Tutoring also plays a crucial role in supporting diverse learners. Every child learns differently. But some students need additional reinforcement, while others benefit from enrichment and challenge. In a one-to-one tutoring environment, children are absorbing information in methods that adapt to their learning styles – whether through visual strategies, hands-on practice, discussion, or structured repetition. This flexibility allows children to experience success in ways that may not always be available in a conventional classroom setting, helping them become confident learners.

Importantly, investing time and financial resources in tutoring reinforces the idea that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness. When children see that learning is a process and that growth comes through effort and guidance, they develop healthier relationships with challenges and setbacks. They learn that improvement is achievable, that mistakes are opportunities, and that persistence leads to progress. These lessons shape character as much as they shape academic outcomes.

So, this year, as we continue to invest in our children’s interests in guitar lessons, baseball, soccer, dance, photography, and robotics, it’s also essential that we invest in one-to-one tutoring. This year, let’s cultivate confidence, competence, and a lifelong love of learning. Because academic development deserves the same intentional care and commitment as our children’s extracurricular activities. When children are given the individualized support they need to thrive academically, they unlock their potential in every aspect of their lives.
